Dr. Christine Darden finds her place in Women’s History
March 16, 2017 — The celebration of Women's History Month, during the month of March, is a reflection of the extraordinary accomplishments of women throughout society who have not only helped shape American history, but also military aviation and aerospace engineering. Dr. Christine Darden, retired NASA aerospace engineer, who developed the sonic boom research program, is a local mathematician who was recently celebrated for her contributions to the Women’s and African American movements in the book “Hidden Figures” written by Margot Lee Shettterly. Her work in mathematics and physics is seen to this day as she influenced aviation technology that drives the design of today’s Joint Base Langley-Eustis warfighters. ... MORE

Langley 1 of 4 AFBs to test bio-based grease
February 21, 2017 — The 733rd Logistics Readiness Squadron vehicle management flight at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, was chosen to participate in a 12-month long experimental testing of a new bio-based grease to lessen JBLE’s impact on the environment. The 441st Vehicle Support Chain Operations Squadron and the representatives from the Defense Logistics Agency briefed the vehicle management flight about the impact of the bio-based grease on the three vehicles chosen to test the grease, Jan. 31, 2017. Members of the 441st VSCOS will also partner with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, NASA and the Kennedy Space Center to test the bio-based grease in their vehicles. ... MORE

POL: we fuel the fight
February 8, 2017 — From refueling jets and firetrucks to testing fuel samples and maintaining liquid oxygen, the 733rd Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels management flight does it all at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia. The fuels management flight, also known as POL for petroleum, oils and lubricants, provides fuel support to the Air Combat Command, Fort Eustis’ Training Doctrine, six battalions, five wings and 30 organizations across JBLE. About 70 POL Airmen supply more than 9.5 million gallons of fuel approximately 60 aircraft, all government operated vehicles, generators and GOV refueling stations around base. “We are a family here at POL and we ensure that we treat the base like that too,” said U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Kevin Mendelsohn, 733rd LRS fuels management flight commander. “We give outstanding support and make sure the service we provide and the fuel they receive is of extremely high standards.” ... MORE

AF partners with NASA for mission success
December 14, 2016 — Developed in the mid 1990’s by the NASA Geographic Information System office , the Flood Impact Analysis Tool illustrates the effects of localized tidal storm flooding. Through a partnership with NASA, the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, has benefited from the multi-functioning tool, since its arrival to the base in 2006. “The intended purpose of the tool was so we would know where the water was going; however, it has allowed our team to focus on being more productive with our resources,” said Freddie Torres, 633rd CES geospatial information officer. “We use the tool to make smarter decisions, from planning storm impacts to construction projects.” ...
