The true story tellers of military history
March 7, 2017
— “Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it,” said George Santayana, philosopher. Historical events in the military such as World War I, World War II, the Cold War, Operation Desert Storm and many others hold remarkable stories within their past. Many of which would go untold without historians who worked day and night to capture every detail. ...

It only takes one person to make a difference
March 1, 2017
— Suicide is not a topic that is easily discussed in everyday conversation. Meaning, loved ones often have no clue that their family member or friend is contemplating or struggling with the idea of suicide. However there are signs and risk factors, early on, which can be recognized to better help an individual who may be having suicidal thoughts...

Born Under Fire: Soldiers, Airmen learn to maintain air assault weapons
March 1, 2017
— Along a half-mile radius at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, large warehouses filled with 300 different training simulators and approximately 3,000 computer stations provide a real-life training experience for U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force helicopter maintenance students. In those warehouses, instructors and course developers assigned to the 128th Aviation Brigade transform approximately 6,000 aviation maintenance, logistics and leadership students into technically qualified aviation maintainers and logisticians as tactically proficient aviation maintenance leaders every year. The 128th Avn. Bde. earned its name, ‘Born Under Fire,’ when it was temporarily formed during Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989. The brigade served there until its deactivation in 1995, and was then reactivated in 2012. ...

Contracting: filling manpower gaps
February 28, 2017
— From line cooks to the total demolition of a building, the 633rd Contracting Squadron at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, helps guarantee that the installation has the end strength to keep running. Before the U.S. Air Force minimized its personnel by 41 percent in 1990, Airmen executed the majority of base operations services, such as dining facilities, grounds maintenance and custodial services. As the size of the force has become smaller, members have had to continue the same missions, while their responsibilities increase in virtually every mission area. The 633rd Contracting Squadron at JBLE has offered a hand to fill those manpower gaps. ...

Third Port: pivotal point for Army transportation
February 28, 2017
— Crisp air whips around at the mouth of Skiffes Creek on the James River, as a small tug boat glides along the black water, easing to a halt alongside a pier. U.S. Army Soldiers jump out of the watercraft and begin throwing ropes to each other, securing the boat to the pier at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, Feb. 22, 2017. This 40-acre pier complex, known as Third Port, houses U.S. Army vessels in a deep-water port, providing safe harbor for the watercraft fleet. Although mostly used for training personnel in vessel operations and cargo loading, Third Port is an operational pier for the U.S. Army to train in deployment readiness and recovery. ...

MWD: Powering through new partnership
February 15, 2017
— For Howard and Rony, being selected to participate in the Police Week competition at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, when no one thought they could do it, wasn’t easy. There were 30 other teams, most of whom U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Benjamin Howard, 633rd Security Forces Squadron military working dog handler, assumed had more experience than him and his MWD-partner of four months, Rony. The pair from Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, had challenges in the beginning of the competition, which involved detection, one of Rony’s shortcomings. Howard said he was nervous about how he and Rony were doing, but found a stride of confidence when he reflected on the milestones they had made since their initial training. ...

February 8, 2017
— From refueling jets and firetrucks to testing fuel samples and maintaining liquid oxygen, the 733rd Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels management flight does it all at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia. The fuels management flight, also known as POL for petroleum, oils and lubricants, provides fuel support to the Air Combat Command, Fort Eustis’ Training Doctrine, six battalions, five wings and 30 organizations across JBLE. About 70 POL Airmen supply more than 9.5 million gallons of fuel approximately 60 aircraft, all government operated vehicles, generators and GOV refueling stations around base. “We are a family here at POL and we ensure that we treat the base like that too,” said U.S. Air Force 1st Lt.
