Third Port: pivotal point for Army transportation
February 28, 2017
— Crisp air whips around at the mouth of Skiffes Creek on the James River, as a small tug boat glides along the black water, easing to a halt alongside a pier. U.S. Army Soldiers jump out of the watercraft and begin throwing ropes to each other, securing the boat to the pier at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, Feb. 22, 2017. This 40-acre pier complex, known as Third Port, houses U.S. Army vessels in a deep-water port, providing safe harbor for the watercraft fleet. Although mostly used for training personnel in vessel operations and cargo loading, Third Port is an operational pier for the U.S. Army to train in deployment readiness and recovery. ...

February 21, 2017
— The 733rd Logistics Readiness Squadron vehicle management flight at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, was chosen to participate in a 12-month long experimental testing of a new bio-based grease to lessen JBLE’s impact on the environment. The 441st Vehicle Support Chain Operations Squadron and the representatives from the Defense Logistics Agency briefed the vehicle management flight about the impact of the bio-based grease on the three vehicles chosen to test the grease, Jan. 31, 2017. Members of the 441st VSCOS will also partner with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, NASA and the Kennedy Space Center to test the bio-based grease in their vehicles. ...

MWD: Powering through new partnership
February 15, 2017
— For Howard and Rony, being selected to participate in the Police Week competition at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, when no one thought they could do it, wasn’t easy. There were 30 other teams, most of whom U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Benjamin Howard, 633rd Security Forces Squadron military working dog handler, assumed had more experience than him and his MWD-partner of four months, Rony. The pair from Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, had challenges in the beginning of the competition, which involved detection, one of Rony’s shortcomings. Howard said he was nervous about how he and Rony were doing, but found a stride of confidence when he reflected on the milestones they had made since their initial training. ...

POL: we fuel the fight
February 8, 2017
— From refueling jets and firetrucks to testing fuel samples and maintaining liquid oxygen, the 733rd Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels management flight does it all at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia. The fuels management flight, also known as POL for petroleum, oils and lubricants, provides fuel support to the Air Combat Command, Fort Eustis’ Training Doctrine, six battalions, five wings and 30 organizations across JBLE. About 70 POL Airmen supply more than 9.5 million gallons of fuel approximately 60 aircraft, all government operated vehicles, generators and GOV refueling stations around base. “We are a family here at POL and we ensure that we treat the base like that too,” said U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Kevin Mendelsohn, 733rd LRS fuels management flight commander. “We give outstanding support and make sure the service we provide and the fuel they receive is of extremely high standards.” ...

Protect the power: Creating an energy-aware culture
December 14, 2016
— In one day, an Air Force Base can spend $29,863 dollars in electricity and natural gas to operate. To lower operational costs, the U.S. Air Force Energy Assurance Program has placed energy as a critical component of all operations, encouraging smart energy use and energy efficient behaviors among bases. This year’s energy action slogan, “Protect the Power,” aims to encourage Airmen to transform the way they use and see energy. “The energy program is a team effort and we need everyone to be working towards energy efficiency,” said Kevin Rasmussen, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron consulting energy engineer. “We want to make conserving energy a habit for Airmen.” ...

Maintaining grounds keeps JBLE mission ready
November 30, 2016
— If grass continuously grows from the flight line to the front gate with leaves covering sidewalks and parking lots, the Airmen at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia could struggle to support joint and combined operations worldwide. Ground maintenance is one of many key essential functions that is needed to preserve the base. Weekly contractors, like Roderick Wyche Sr., grounds maintainer, are responsible for maintaining over 2,400 acres of land across Langley Air Force Base to include the flightline, buildings and residential areas. ...

Langley’s Lt. O’Hollearn places 13th in Armed Forces Marathon
November 2, 2016
— If not for suffering a broken collar bone and concussion, from a bad landing on his dirt bike at age-14, 2nd Lt. Sean O’Hollearn may not have discovered his love for running. That passion empowered him to finish in 13th place, overall, at the Armed Forces Championship, in the 41st Marine Corps Marathon, Oct. 30 in Washington D.C. His 2:35:58 clocking, at a 5:56 per mile clip, was his first marathon.
