Langley Hospital prepares JBLE youth for upcoming sports, school year

By By Staff Sgt. R. Alex Durbin 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

The 633rd Medical Operations Squadron’ Family Health and Pediatric Clinics partnered to host a child school and sports physical day at U.S. Air Force Hospital Langley on July 20.

The 20 July event was the first of two days when medical providers, nurses and technicians serve as a one-stop source to complete mandatory school and sports physicals for students, who are ages four to 18 years old. The second day is set to take place Aug. 10, 2016.

“Here at the hospital, we want to offer the most access and convenience possible for our patients and ensure our service members’ children are prepared for the upcoming school year,” said Capt. Jonathan Beatty, 633rd MDOS Family Nurse Practitioner. “[The physical days] allow us to set aside time to really focus on our children.”

The physical day also brought professionals from various support organizations from across Langley, including the Nutritional Health Clinic, Immunizations Clinic, Healthcare Integration, 633rd Dental Squadron and 633rd Security Forces Squadron, together to provide patients education on a variety of health-related topics.

“While planning the physical days, we wanted to ensure that our patients to have access to a wide range of resources not normally available during typical medical appointments,” said Beatty. “This mini-health fair and open house educates our patients on important health issues while they wait to be seen.”

According to Tech. Sgt. Keith Duron, 633rd DS Preventative Dentistry Chief, the information each participating organization brought to share with the patients and their parents can have a long-reaching effect.

“This event provided a great opportunity to reach a large portion of our community,” he said. “By reaching these young kids and their parents, we can ensure they practice healthy habits in the future.”

Duron said events like the physical days give Airmen an important opportunity to support the JBLE community.

“We’re playing our part to make sure our kids are safe and healthy,” he said. “Knowledge is power and [this event] gave us the chance to share that with our kids.”

To participate, a parent or legal guardian must schedule an appointment and be present during the physical. Parents must bring completed physical forms and shot records to the appointment.

Children with chronic medical conditions including asthma, food allergies, attention deficit disorder, heart conditions or developmental delay, must schedule an appointment separately for an in-depth assessment with their primary care provider.
