March marks Brain Injury Awareness Month

March marks brain injury awareness month, the special observance month dedicated to raising TBI consciousness and honoring the millions of survivors living with brain injuries every day. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 1.7 million people sustain traumatic brain injuries annually, and TBI is a contributing factor for nearly a third of injury-related deaths and 235,000 yearly hospitalizations. AER provides aid, peace of mind to Soldiers

The annual U.S. Army Emergency Relief campaign is scheduled to run from March 1 through May 15, to educate Soldiers of AER’s financial assistance benefits and encourage helping others in need. According to AER, since 9/11, the campaign distributed approximately $800 million to Soldiers and families in the form of grants, interest-free loans, and scholarships for children and spouses of active-duty and retired Soldiers. The late Dr. (Capt.) Humphrey Harwood Curtis Jr., a Confederate Army doctor, was laid to rest between what is now the third and fourth hole of the Pines Golf Course at Fort Eustis, Va. Many historians believed his grave was on the golf course, but due to a lack of records or individuals able to identify the location, didn’t know for sure until May 2001 when archaeologists identified the cemetery. Joint Base Langley-Eustis Service members and families can line up their sights more affordably at the newly-designated privately-owned weapons range at Fort Eustis, Va., which boasts a pistol and rifle range for a $30 annual fee.
