LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. –
The secure internet, or SIPRNet, has become a key element to many of the missions carried out on Joint Base Langley Eustis. Anyone who uses SIPRNet is familiar with its rigid password standards.
Beginning December 2012, Air force policy has mandated the implementation of a new SIPRNet token. SIPR users will be relieved of the burden of having to remember complex passwords and doing time consuming password resets that can detract from mission requirements.
The new SIPRNet token card or Public Key Infrastructure card (PKI) is similar in appearance and function to the common access card. The new token is a type of smart card that will enable a faster and more secure method of logging onto systems connected to SIPRNet. By leveraging the Public Key Infrastructure on a token or card, users will use the new PKI card to log into a classified system, as if they were logging into a normal Air Force computer.
The 633rd Communications Squadron would like to relay some useful information to potential users.
· The new SIPRNet token or PKI card can be acquired from the Local Registration Authority located in 633rd Communication Squadron, building 768.
· The PIN requirement will be between eight and 10 digits.
· The new SIPRNet token is considered a high value, unclassified item and is only considered classified when connected to a SIPRNet card reader and unlocked using the secret PIN associated with the card.
· The SIPRNet token is NOT a form of identification as it contains no photo, printed data, barcodes or biometrics.
The new SIPRNet tokens will enable a safer, efficient and more convenient use of classified networks by maintaining confidentiality, integrity and availability through non-repudiation and authentication, which will allow Airmen to continue to fly, fight and win in air, space and cyberspace.
