Beware of flash flooding, standing water

LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. -- Beware of flash flooding, standing water. Although Langley isn't often affected by hurricanes, severe weather is expected throughout the summer months, and flash flooding is a dangerous byproduct of torrential downpours. Lt. Col. Matt Esper, 1st Fighter Wing Safety Office chief of safety, advises drivers to avoid driving through areas of standing water, as it may disable vehicles. Drivers cannot gauge how deep the water is and may be deeper than it appears. Also, drivers are advised to avoid driving through moving water. ODU ceases wind tunnel testing

LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. – An X-48C experimental aircraft is mounted in a full-scale wind tunnel here Aug. 31. Old Dominion University operates the tunnel, which was built in 1930, for clients including NASA, Boeing Co. and the U.S. Air Force. The tunnel measures 30x60 feet and is the largest university operated wind tunnel in the world. The tunnel provides a controlled test environment to measure aerodynamic forces on vehicles. ODU will cease wind tunnel testing on Sept. 4, and NASA's Langley Research Center will later dismantle the building because it is no longer strategically important to NASA’s aeronautical research. LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. -- 1st Lt. Krista Barajas, 1st Force Support Squadron officer in charge, performs roll call during a Phase I Operational Readiness Exercise here Aug. 27. The ORE is designed to establish Langley's expeditionary readiness and efficiency in deploying Airmen. More than 2,500 Airmen will be involved in the exercise, which will measure the 1 FW's capabilities on graded, step-by-step guidelines which involve preparing aircraft, cargo and Airmen to deploy seamlessly within an established period of time.
