Cookies because we care

By Staff Sgt. April Wickes 1st Fighter Wing Public Affairs

With more than 2,000 dozen cookies collected this year, the Langley Officers' Spouses' Club exceeded its goal to provide one dozen cookies to every dormitory Airmen during their annual cookie drive.

The mass amounts of cookies donated by the Langley community, civic organizations, local schools, churches and businesses were collected and packaged Dec. 14.

Along with the cookies, local school children also sent cards and notes to the Airmen.

"The community has just impressed us this year," said Kris Cole the cookie drive chairman and wife of Lt. Col. Robert Cole. "This has been a very giving community."

In addition to the community's donation of cookies, more than 40 volunteers contributed to the success of the cookie drive by packaging and distributing the cookies.

"I love the community, and I'm glad to be doing something to help," said Tracy Malafarina, wife of Col. Frank Marafarina, as she packaged up cookies.

Due to the thousands of cookies that were donated, the LOSC will not only provide cookies to Langley dorm residents, but they will provide cookies to the gate guards, fire department, emergency room, gym, flightline, dorm residents at Fort Eustis and local United Service Organizations.

One of the recipients, a  1st Security Forces Squadron Airman, was caught off guard by the cookie delivery to the visitor center.

" It was kind of out of the ordinary, but cool that people thought of us," said Staff Sgt. Brandon Olsen.
