Fighter pilot takes inspiration to new heights
March 28, 2018
— “I hear at times in my uniform out and about in daily life, ‘do they let women fly?’” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Cheryl Buehn, the only female instructor pilot in the 71st Fighter Training Squadron. “I don’t think they realize they’re asking a female fighter pilot. So I take a breath and I say, ‘absolutely. They let women fly fighters, tankers, RPAs, everything. Both men and women fly a lot of different platforms, and everyone is important to the fight right now.’”...

March 29, 2017
— At the age of 13 she defended her friend from the uncomfortable approaches made by an older gentleman at church. To this day she continues to be a voice for justice and equality for others. For Claudia Lynch, who is now the Army Support Activity Deputy Command judge advocate, even the smallest achievement was an extraordinary victory. “Whenever I see injustices I try to address it, and I have done that all my life,” said Lynch. “I always stood up for the kids that were picked on or bullied. I have always had that in me – that desire, that passion to protect those who can’t protect themselves.”...

March 21, 2017
— When Jacqueline Cochran was appointed as director of the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots in 1942, she had already made history as the first woman to fly a bomber across the Atlantic during World War II. According to the National Archives, prior to earning her pilot’s license, Cochran studied nursing and was employed as a beautician before establishing her own cosmetics company. After Cochran became interested in flying, she took lessons and bought her own plane to use for personal and business travel. ...

Dr. Christine Darden finds her place in Women’s History
March 16, 2017
— The celebration of Women's History Month, during the month of March, is a reflection of the extraordinary accomplishments of women throughout society who have not only helped shape American history, but also military aviation and aerospace engineering. Dr. Christine Darden, retired NASA aerospace engineer, who developed the sonic boom research program, is a local mathematician who was recently celebrated for her contributions to the Women’s and African American movements in the book “Hidden Figures” written by Margot Lee Shettterly. Her work in mathematics and physics is seen to this day as she influenced aviation technology that drives the design of today’s Joint Base Langley-Eustis warfighters. ...
