Looking back through photos of his experience while stationed in South Korea after the signing of the armistice, retired U.S. Army Maj. E. Vernon Smith Jr. said one of the hardest things was being away from his family. One instance he remembers most vividly was donating clothes and toys to an impoverished orphanage.
