'Be Ready' this hurricane season with new AF apps

By John Burt AFCEC Public Affairs

EDITOR'S NOTE: This story is a combination of two separate stories previously written.

The U.S. Air Force Civil Engineer Center's Emergency Management Division has implemented a new application for downloading on-the-go emergency preparation on Android and most Apple devices, such as iPhone and iPad.

The Air Force "Be Ready" mobile app was developed for emergency hazard information and preparation guides and is the latest resource available through AFEM's Be Ready Awareness Campaign.

"The 'Be Ready' app provides information about what to do before, during and after specific threats," said Rob Genova, AFCEC emergency management education and training specialist. "It's a complement to our printed Air Force Emergency Preparedness Guide.

It has a family evacuation plan that you can tailor to your needs," continued Genova. "It's pre-loaded with emergency numbers and sites like the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Red Cross. You can also add your own emergency contacts and local agencies."

The "Be Ready" app is free and gives detailed information covering a wide range of threats including floods, hurricanes and wildfires. It also provides emergency supply checklists.

"We encourage everyone to have an emergency supply kit," Sam Hazzard, the Air Force Emergency Management education and training program manager. "The app provides a recommended emergency checklist of supplies that can be customized depending on the threat, geographic area or situation. You can check off items as you add them to your kit."

Since the release of the Android version in January, AFCEC's emergency management experts say the response has been good from both military members and civilians alike.

"EM offices throughout the Air Force use tools like this to help increase emergency preparedness across their base and community," said Genova. "We've received comments from the public saying they like the amount of information included, it's easy to use and moves smoothly from section-to-section."

According to Genova, releasing the Apple platform in early July now allows the EM offices to provide the tool to more personnel.

The "Be Ready" app is available for download now at Apple's app store or the Google play site. For more information, visit BeReady.af.mil.
