LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. –
Two road work projects are scheduled to begin within the next two to four months at Langley Air Force Base, Va., to help the ease flow of incoming traffic and meet current anti-terrorism and force-protection standards for base entrances.
According to Jim Wampler, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron engineering flight chief, the first project will include finishing the Lee Road expansion.
The expansion project will improve traffic flow and safety for vehicles turning left onto Lee Road inside the West Gate entrance. Moving the Lee Road and Sweeney Boulevard intersection eastward will allow for the installation of new pop-up barriers at the proper distance from the West Gate to meet current AT/FP standards.
Lee Road will be closed for up to two weeks as crews complete the expansion project, said Wampler.
In addition to the work on Lee Road, workers will widen Sweeney Boulevard, a central artery through the installation.
To further improve driver safety and convenience, a traffic signal will be placed at the new intersection of Sweeney Boulevard and Lee Road at the east end of the Lee Road expansion.
Finally, an addition of a fifth lane will serve as a turn lane for motorists turning left onto Lee Road after entering the base through the West Gate.
The West Gate will not be closed during any point of the projects, said Wampler.
