New firing range opens at Fort Eustis

By Staff Sgt Ashley Hawkins 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

The 733rd Force Support Division hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of a privately-owned weapons range at Fort Eustis, Nov. 22.

According to Sherri Noland, 733rd FSD marketing chief, the range will allow active-duty Service members, retirees, Department of Defense personnel and their dependents to fire personally-owned firearms without the need to travel far or pay extensive fees at off-base facilities.

The location of the new range is currently used as a training area by military and security forces personnel for mission requirements and is accessible to patrons when training or range maintenance is not is session.

"It is a part of doing more with less," said U.S. Army Col. William Galbraith, 733rd Mission Support Group commander. "We have to think of ways to act with existing infrastructures and make sure we've got our military community fulfilled with great activities. Now we can give our [Service members] and civilians a facility to utilize their weapons on their own time."

Patrons must register their weapons with the 733rd Security Forces Squadron and complete a range safety class held by Fort Eustis Outdoor Recreation. Upon completion of the class, all members are required to obtain an Air Force form 483, Certificate of Competency, prior to firing on the range.

The range is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 30 minutes before sunset. Authorized users are permitted to sponsor one individual at a time to accompany them to the range. The annual fee is $30.
