JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. –
Individuals who experience a substance abuse disorder often feel isolated and alone. When alcohol or other drugs become a problem, they can affect every facet of the user's life as well as their family members. Getting the support and motivation to help make real life changes is a process. This process begins with identifying the problem and seeking help from trained specialists in substance abuse treatment.
The Alcohol Drug Abuse and Prevention Treatment (ADAPT) Program at Malcolm Grow Medical Clinics and Surgery Center provides assessment, education and treatment for individuals involved in high-risk substance use as well as substance abuse or dependence. Early intervention and short term counselling can often resolve a problem before it results in an event or incident that could jeopardize a career or even a life.
"Many people are unaware that prevention works and that people do recover from addiction and go on to lead full and productive lives. As a military community, it's vital that we offer support to individuals facing substance abuse and let them know that help-seeking is okay," said Capt. George Mitzner, 779th Medical Operations Squadron, ADAPT manager.
"Seeking care is not a cause for discharge from the military. Seventy-five percent of individuals treated in the ADAPT program do not have a substance abuse diagnosis or require intensive treatment," said Mitzner.
Remember, the first step for change begins with you. Substance abuse disorders can be treated just like any other health problem. By seeking help, people who experience substance abuse can overcome addiction and embark on a new path toward improved health and wellness.
