LANGLEY AFB, VA. –
Living on the Peninsula is a unique experience - as an abundant source of water surrounds it. An unfortunate fact of life, however, is that mold grows where there is moisture. Mold growth has the potential to be especially prevalent in areas inundated by flooding.
The best way to prevent mold is by controlling moisture.
If you find mold either in your home or work area, there are certain steps to follow.
In base housing, call the Langley Housing Office at 764-4518 and make a report. Housing managers will investigate and contact the appropriate parties.
In your work area, contact your facility manager who has specific guidance on controlling moisture and mold.
Mold prevention tips
-Keep humidity below 60 percent (ideally 30-50 percent)
-Use a dehumidifier during humid months and in damp spaces
-Be sure the room or building has good ventilation
-Use exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms when cooking or showering
-Promptly repair water leaks- roofs, windows, and pipes
Mold clean-up guidelines
-Thoroughly clean and dry areas after flooding
-Remove mold as soon as it becomes apparent
-Scrub mold off hard surfaces with soap and water, then use a bleach solution (1/4 cup to a gallon of water) and leave in place for 10 minutes. Remember to wear non-porous gloves and protective eye wear, and air out the room during and after cleaning by opening all windows and doors.
-Do not paint or caulk moldy surfaces; clean up the mold and dry before painting
-Absorbent or porous materials such as ceiling tiles and carpet may have to be thrown out
-Remember, never mix bleach with other household cleaners and always follow the manufacturer's label instructions for proper use.
For most individuals, exposure to mold rarely presents a health risk. If prone to mold allergies, a few individuals may experience a variety of health effects upon exposure to damp and moldy environments.
Immune-compromised people and individuals with chronic lung disease should avoid areas that are likely to have mold, such as compost piles, cut grass and wooded areas.
