Paving way to mission readiness
October 4, 2017
— An engine revs as tires roll over the silky black top steadily reaching 40, 50, 60 miles per hour, then, all of a sudden, the front tire sinks into a pothole. The chassis slams against the asphalt, the steering wheel jerks to the side as the sound of screeching tires echo—the car has lost control. If a pilot in control of a U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor were to find such a pothole as it screamed down the runway, the outcome could be catastrophic. To prevent such an incident, the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron is tasked with the up keep of the oldest active U.S. Air Force airfield, which supports 5th generation weapons systems. ...

CES Airmen navigate through deployment training
June 20, 2017
— As an improvised explosive device detonated, everyone dropped to the ground. For just one moment, there is silence, then shouts of assurance echo throughout the air. Although just a training environment with simulated IEDs, the situation appeared real for the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron Airmen donned in Kevlar vests and helmets. The simulated situation was part of the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron’s Prime Base Engineer Emergency Force land navigation and convoy training held at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, June 15, 2017...

Oh, deer: JBLE environmental ensures wildlife aids mission
May 31, 2017
— Joint Base Langley-Eustis is comprised of roughly 11,000 acres, 8,000 of which are part of the natural forest landscape of Fort Eustis. In charge of preserving the natural resources across those 8,000 acres, enabling mission success across the installation, is the 733rd Civil Engineer Division environmental element. One of their most crucial roles is maintaining the deer population. This ensures the livelihood and protection of the installation’s wildlife, while also maintaining adequate training areas for U.S. Army Soldiers...

AF boosts environment with plant relocation
January 14, 2017
— Volunteers helped the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron relocate pollinator plants from the Bethel Park Pollinator Garden to the nature trail on Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., Jan. 6, 2017. Once an old dumping ground, the pollinator garden was installed at Bethel Park in 2014 in accordance with the National Public Lands Day project to help clean up the area. The garden plants provided food or habitat for pollinator organisms such as hummingbirds, bees, butterflies, and occasionally small mammals. A grant from the National Environmental Education Foundation and the Department of Defense Legacy Resource Management Program awarded funds to 633rd CES personnel to plant a garden, however, due to the location of the garden, it has been underutilized by the public and overgrown with weeds. ...

Protect the power: Creating an energy-aware culture
December 14, 2016
— In one day, an Air Force Base can spend $29,863 dollars in electricity and natural gas to operate. To lower operational costs, the U.S. Air Force Energy Assurance Program has placed energy as a critical component of all operations, encouraging smart energy use and energy efficient behaviors among bases. This year’s energy action slogan, “Protect the Power,” aims to encourage Airmen to transform the way they use and see energy. “The energy program is a team effort and we need everyone to be working towards energy efficiency,” said Kevin Rasmussen, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron consulting energy engineer. “We want to make conserving energy a habit for Airmen.” ...

JBLE prepared for sea level rise
November 16, 2016
— One hundred years ago the National Advisory Council for Aeronautics identified the coastal area that is now Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia as ideal for conducting NACA, U.S. Army and U.S. Navy missions. Despite challenges caused by the sea level rise, the base’s location on the Chesapeake Bay remains an ideal location for conducting over-water flying missions. ...
