Freedom to be yourself; U.S. Air Force captain shows the importance of pride month

In 1993, the Department of Defense enacted Directive 1304.26, better known as the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. Military law stated service members could no longer ask another service member about their sexual orientation or reveal their own sexual orientation. The policy allowed “homosexual or bisexual” members to serve, but only if they were silent.

Soldier hosts 2nd annual Pride run

The month of June is nationally recognized as the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer or Questioning Pride Observance month to commemorate the Stonewall Riots, which spurred the ongoing fight for equal rights and fair justice for LGBTQ+ community members.

Soldier hosts 1st Pride run at JBLE

In 2009, President Barack Obama designated the month of June the official observance for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer or Questioning Pride Month. The observance promotes equal rights regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity and recognizes contributions made by LGBTQ community members.
