JBLE prepared for sea level rise
November 16, 2016 — One hundred years ago the National Advisory Council for Aeronautics identified the coastal area that is now Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia as ideal for conducting NACA, U.S. Army and U.S. Navy missions. Despite challenges caused by the sea level rise, the base’s location on the Chesapeake Bay remains an ideal location for conducting over-water flying missions. ... MORE

The shoreline stabilization includes a 10 kilometer rip rap sea wall that brings the base’s shore 5.4 feet above sea level. 633rd Safety: a safe holiday is a happy holiday
November 15, 2016 — As the holiday season begins, the number of long-distance trips, beginning at Thanksgiving, are increased by as much as 54 percent compared to the rest of the year. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the average Thanksgiving long-distance trip is 214 miles long, while Christmas and New Year’s holiday travel averages 275 miles or more. ... MORE

1st FW Raptors, crew soar through flying hours
November 9, 2016 — The 1st Fighter Wing’s F-22 Raptors collectively reached their flying hour mark this fiscal year of more than 6,000 hours. For each fiscal year, the flying hour program tasks the number of hours pilots need to acquire in order to maintain proficient in combative flying, based on budgeting and the maximum number of sorties the wing is capable of producing. With limited resources available, the 1st FW completing the hours was an intricate balance between progression in maintenance and tactical logistics, which guided the Raptors to success. “We have to maximize each and every sortie flown to reach the highest level of combat readiness,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Michael, 1st Operational Support Squadro¬¬¬¬n director of operations. “It takes a significant number of man-hours and resources to prepare and fix the aircraft for each and every flight.” ... MORE

PMEL flexes TFCU muscles
November 9, 2016 — When the 1st Fighter Wing trains to prepare for Global Response Force taskings, people may hear aircraft launch from a mile away, but what they don’t typically hear or see are other components that get the jets in the air. The 1st Maintenance Squadron’s Test Measurement and Diagnostic Flight performs some of the lesser heard maintenance support duties, specifically calibrating mission essential equipment and determining temperature points the equipment can be used in. ... Munitions Airmen ensure combat airpower success
November 8, 2016 — 1st Maintenance Squadron’s munitions flight Airmen make potential impacts at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia every day, building weapons needed for successful combat airpower. Munitions Airmen provide support to the F-22 Raptor mission, in addition to supporting the missions of security forces, explosive ordinance disposal or the Office of Special Investigations. The productions, materials and systems sections within the munitions flight help provide services base wide. “Without Ammo, the fighter jets and bombers are just another aircraft, just another plane,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Carl Slater, 1st MXS munitions flight assistant NCO in charge. “Ammo plays a huge role in what our jets and bombers do in order to succeed in the mission.” ... MORE

633rd FSS spices up food services
November 2, 2016 — The 633rd Force Support Squadron has a new Director of Food and Beverage, James Belle, who will be the point of contact at the leadership level for all nonappropriated food service operations at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia.
