Fort Eustis holds open house, Public Lands Day events
Mr. Vaughn and Mr. Currier work together to help make a trail at Fort Crafford during National Public Lands Day Saturday, which was moved from Sept. 25 to Saturday to be in conjunction with Archaeology Month. Fort Crafford, located at Training Area 28 on Fort Eustis, was the second part of the tour. The fort is a pentagon-shaped earthwork constructed in 1861 to 1862 by Confederate forces. It became the right anchor for Maj. Gen. John Magruder’s line of defense across the Peninsula from Yorktown. Crafford was designated a National Historic Place in 1974.
