Using less energy starts with us

By Airman 1st Class Jason J. Brown 1st Fighter Wing Public Affairs

Langley spends $34,000 per day in energy costs, nearly $1.2 million a year.

Langley's goal is to reduce energy consumption by three percent each year, saving $375,000 annually. That's a considerable savings, funds that can be used elsewhere on base for a variety of programs to benefit our Airmen.

Civil engineers here are using $6 million of federal stimulus funds to make Langley buildings more energy efficient. The renovations and upgrades include new hangar doors, ventilation systems and automated climate and light controls.

These improvements are important steps and will help Langley achieve a 30-percent reduction in energy costs by 2015; here are some ways you can help out:

· During the heating season, Langley's Energy Conservation Policy requires building thermostats to be set at 69 degrees during occupied periods and 55 degrees when unoccupied. Make sure the thermostats are set properly.

· Turn off lights when not needed, even for short periods of time.

· Turn off all printers, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment and appliances at the end of each day. However, leave your computer on so it can receive nightly updates.

· Stop using personal refrigerators and unplug them.

Every member of Team Langley is responsible in making our base more energy-efficient. Together, we can help the Air Force save money while saving the earth, too. Remember, the key to energy conservation is you.
