Joint publication provides solutions on battlefield

By Maj. Ray A. Zuniga ALSA Air Branch Officer

In keeping with Air, Land, Forces Applications Agency's original charter, Air, Land, Sea Application Center provides joint solutions to commanders and troops in the battlefield.

In July 1985, the agency produced the first version of the Multi-Service Procedures for the Joint Application of Firepower, or J-FIRE, a pocket-sized quick-reference guide for requesting fire support and currently utilized in Afghanistan and Iraq.

A recent testament to the handbook's war-fighting role was revealed last month at the Infantry Warfighter Conference at Fort Benning, Ga., where many Soldiers who were not familiar with Air, Land, Forces Application Agency immediately recognized J-FIRE.

Utilizing subject-matter experts ranging in service and rank, the Air, Land, Forces Applications Agency produced initiatives for airspace management, air defense suppression and close-air support; the Agency will continue to update materials with the expertise of those who recently returned from combat and found gaps requiring a common-ground, multi-service solution.

The publication has been continuously updated for nearly 25 years and continues to be the Agency's most critical and widely distributed publication.

Editor's Note: This is the second article in the Air, Land, Sea Applications Center feature series. Look for the third and final article, "War-fighter manuals create order out of chaos" Nov. 13.
