Langley Losers: And the winner is…

By Airman 1st Class Jason J. Brown 633d Air Base Wing Public Affairs

In January, four of Langley's most motivated Airmen stepped up to the challenge of changing their lives for the better by adopting healthier lifestyles through diet and exercise. These strong-willed warriors are striving to meet and exceed their health and fitness goals, wrapping up the contest in May. Throughout their journey, you can track their triumphs and setbacks here through updates, weigh-ins and insight from the contestants.

After nearly four months of cutting calories and demanding workouts, Staff Sgt. Marie Moien, 1st Maintenance Group Information Management non commissioned officer in charge, took home the title of winner of the 2010 Langley Losers competition.

Moien entered the competition weighing in at 186 pounds with a 35-inch waistline. At final measurement, she lost 15 pounds and trimmed down to a 31-inch waist. While she may not have reached his initial weight-loss goals, she said she is pleased with her results.

"I learned a lot in this experience," she said. "This was very difficult, but I am proud of the progress I made."

Earlier in the contest, Moien was placed on a physically restricting profile, preventing her from doing a majority of the workouts designed to help shed the extra pounds.

"This truly tested my commitment, especially when I was placed on a profile," she remarked. "I was determined to do whatever I could to keep my goals in front of me and not give up.

Moien credited her success to proper dieting, which is equally important to weight loss as regular exercise.

"It wasn't easy to limit myself as much. I had to compensate because I couldn't work out like I wanted to," she said. "Now that I know it's possible to eat right and get results, I want to stick with it moving forward."

Fortunately for Moien, her profile expired May 1, giving her the chance to get back in gear and keep her eyes on the prize.

"I'm looking forward to losing that extra 15 pounds within eight weeks," she said. "Because of my profile, my PT test score didn't increase like I wanted, but I'm not quitting now."

Most importantly, Moien said she learned she is responsible for her success.

"I thought that by doing this it would make working out easier because I was held accountable by others. It didn't," she said. "I have to hold myself accountable."
