The Front Line: Staff Sgt. Shakera Jones

By 633d Communications Squadron Information Assurance

Front Line Warrior: Staff Sgt. Shakera Jones

Deployed Unit: 451st Expeditionary Communications Squadron, Afghanistan

Duty Title: Wing Information Assurance Manager/Alternate Computer Security Responsible Officer

Home Unit: 633d Communications Squadron

Hometown: Summerton, S.C.

Time in Service: Active-duty Air Force six and a half years

Describe your deployed duty and the tools you use to accomplish it: My job here is to provide guidance on protecting and managing the use, processing, storage and transmission of information or data on the Air Force network. I am also responsible for providing COMSEC materials to several units across the AOR. Some of the tools that I use daily are the Air Force Community of Practice, Air Force Instructions, and training from home station and previous deployments. I have been a part of the Information Assurance (Cyber Surety) world for almost four years, so just the experience alone has enabled me to do my job more efficiently.

What do you bring to the fight? My capabilities of my career field contribute to the mission a great deal because my job focuses on the security of the information. There are several tools that the adversary tries to use to gain information, and my job is to find them and ensure they are not introduced to the network.

What are you overall thoughts and opinions about your mission there? My overall thoughts on my mission are rewarding most times because I feel that I am helping with protection of information from the adversary. Protecting this information also helps protect our troops who are here fighting the war on a daily basis. I also feel that I am serving a purpose because if COMSEC materials aren't issued, planes don't fly, and bombs aren't on target.

Supervisor Comments: Sergeant Jones is an outstanding Airman willing to go above and beyond no matter what the task. I am truly proud to be her supervisor, and it's an honor to serve alongside such a professional Airman.
