New security forces initiative: Cop's Corner

By Tech. Sgt. April Wickes 633d Air Base Wing Public Affairs

The 733rd Security Forces Squadron has created a new initiative, "Cop's Corner," a weekly bulletin to inform workers, residents and visitors at Fort Eustis, Va. of SFS topics.

The bulletin is meant to provide a new topic each week with a variety of information such as SFS services, community awareness, hunting and fishing policies, traffic violations and crime trends and prevention.

U.S. Army Lt. Col. Kevin Hanrahan, 733rd Security Forces Squadron commander, wants to open communications between the SFS and community, and show that the men and women of the SFS are there for them.

"We know our job is to take care of the people who live, work on and visit the installation," said Hanrahan. "I feel that we have to communicate with them; we have to allow people to know what's going on."

"Cop's Corner" is just one of many new initiatives taking place at Fort Eustis. There is also enhanced manning at the gates, increased foot patrols and on occasion, bike patrols.

"We have to strike the balance of being one with the community while enforcing the laws of the community," said John Challis 733rd SFS deputy commander. "We want the community to trust us and report anything they see wrong, knowing we will take the correct action."

According to Hanrahan, the ultimate goal is for a more involved community that can make better-informed decisions, leading to a safer installation.

Look for "Cop's Corner" each week in the Peninsula Warrior newspaper.
