Fort Eustis first responders awarded international accreditation

By Airman 1st Class Austin Harvill 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

The Fort Eustis Fire & Emergency Services Flight recently received "Accredited Agency" status from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International for meeting the criteria established through the CFAI's voluntary self-assessment and accreditation program.

The flight is one of 150 agencies internationally to receive accreditation from the CFAI and the Center for Public Safety Excellence, Inc., which puts them in the top 1 percent of fire departments across the United States.

"The agency's achievement of Accredited Agency status demonstrates the commitment of the agency to provide the highest quality of service to our community," said Todd Hartsch, Fort Eustis Fire & Emergency Services fire chief. "We have also been able to use the CFAI's process as a proactive mechanism to plan for the future of this agency and locate areas where we can improve on the quality of the services we provide to those that live and work on the installation."

The unit embarked on this process more than four years ago when it originally started under the command of the Army. When Fort Eustis merged with Langley Air Force Base in 2010, the entire process needed overhauling, said Hartsch. Much of the credit for achieving this accreditation after the revisions goes to the accreditation manager, Army 1st Lt. Bobby Privette.

Privette ensured all of the documents presented before the commission were precise, truthful and accurately reflected the services they provide to the installation and their mutual aid partners. Additionally, every member of the flight and division took part in making this happen. It was truly a team effort and one well deserving of their success.
