HAMPTON, Va. –
Hampton city mayor, Molly Ward, was appointed as a special assistant to the president and deputy director for the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs Sept. 30, and will step down as mayor Oct. 4.
In her new role, Ward will lead White House engagement with mayors and county and municipal officials across the country
Ward has served as mayor of Hampton since 2008, and prior to being elected mayor, she served as the Hampton city treasurer. She recently won reelection in May 2012 with nearly two-thirds of voter support.
In her time as mayor, Ward maintained close ties with the local military community and attended events including the 9/11 remembrance ceremonies, annual U.S. Army and Air Force week celebrations and the recent acting secretary of the Air Force, Eric Fanning's visit to Langley.
Ward leaves Hampton's top elected post with nearly three years left in her term, meaning city council members are required to appoint an interim mayor within 60 days.
