Lee Road and Sweeney Boulevard construction update

By 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs Joint Base Langley-Eustis

The first phase of the Lee Road construction project at Langley Air Force Base was completed, with the exception of the application of the final coat of asphalt.

The first phase included the tie-in of the eastern end of the new Lee Road expansion with Sweeney Boulevard.

The second phase, which includes the addition of a fifth lane to Sweeney Boulevard, is scheduled for completion Nov. 8.

Following this second phase, a traffic signal and new pop-up security barriers at the new intersection of Lee Road and Sweeney Boulevard will be installed with an estimated completion date of February 2014.

After the light and barriers work is complete, Lee Road will be closed for two weeks to tie in the new section of road at the western end near the West Gate. During this same two-week period, a final coat of asphalt and appropriate striping will be applied to both the fifth lane on Sweeney Boulevard and to the new portion of Lee Road. Additional security guard railing will also be installed along the northern side of Sweeney Boulevard.

The final project work scheduled for this area of Sweeney Boulevard involves the milling of the existing pavement and overlaying it with asphalt from the new intersection out to the West Gate. The Armistead gate will remain open to both in and outbound traffic during all of the work, with some minor lane closures at various times.

All of the construction work for the area has an estimated completion of April 2014.
