Local veterans reveal Vietnam War 50th Anniversary flag

As part of the worldwide commemoration by the Defense Commissary Agency, the Langley Air Force Base commissary held a flag revealing ceremony to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, Nov. 9.

The ceremony was held to recognize the service, valor and sacrifice of the Service members who have served in the Vietnam War and also present a new Department of Defense sponsored Vietnam War 50th anniversary flag.

In attendance were Vietnam veterans from the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 824 and other retired Service members.

"I was proud to serve in Vietnam. I was proud to serve my country," said retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jim Shamblem, local VFW member. "I know every time I woke up in Vietnam, I was glad to be alive."

Shamblem spoke to the crowd at the commissary recalling memories of returning from Vietnam and not receiving the same homecomings that other Soldiers did during the Korean War and World War II.

"We didn't get a parade -- we got spit on," said Shamblem. "As Vietnam veterans, we dedicate ourselves to making sure active-duty Service members never get treated like we did."

U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. David Huber, 633rd Mission Support Group deputy commander, spoke during the presentation. He had family members serve in the Vietnam War.

"I have served in a few conflicts myself, so it was an honor to attend the event," said Huber. "It was a great opportunity to pay tribute to those who served before me."

As the speakers wrapped up, the VFW members revealed the commemoration flag. Shamblem read the flag's description, becoming overwhelmed with feelings as he finished.

"The seal's blue background is the same color as the nation in the United States flag. When placed next to the World War II and the Korean War Commemoration flags, the Vietnam War Commemoration flag will signify Vietnam veterans taking their rightful place among generations of U.S. veterans."
