JBLE tax center now open

By Staff Sgt. Antoinette Gibson 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Tax preparation and assistance services will be offered by appointment, to all active-duty Service members, retirees and military family members who possess a valid military identification card at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., from Feb. 3 through April 15, 2014.

This tax season, more than 40 Langley Airmen have volunteered to help people seeking assistance with their taxes.

To ensure tax forms are properly filled out and filed, volunteers were required to complete 60 hours of training.  After the training, volunteers were officially certified by the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, earning advanced and military certifications.

Although tax assistance will be made available to all members of the JBLE community, the Langley tax center staff encourages younger Airmen to take advantage of the free tax assistance.

"Our focus this year is definitely [junior-enlisted] Airmen," said Staff Sgt. Shawn Field, 633rd Air Base Wing paralegal and Langley tax center noncommissioned officer in charge.  "Although we are open for Airmen of all ranks, officers, and retirees, our focus is the junior enlisted."

When filing taxes at the JBLE tax centers, the following documents are needed:

· Social security card or another document from the social security administration with a social security number

· A valid photo identification card

· A W-2 or 1099 form

· Proof of any claimed deductions or expenses

Volunteers suggest customers ensure they have all needed documentation with them prior to their appointment to make the process run smoothly.
