Langley hosts Special Olympics basketball tournament

Langley Air Force Base welcomed 100 athletes who participated in the 2014 Special Olympics Virginia Area 22 Basketball Tournament, for the third consecutive year, Feb. 15.

The event, held at both Fitness Centers, was part of SOVA's regional basketball tournament, which allowed athletes the opportunity to qualify for state-level tournaments. The Air Combat Command Fitness Center hosted full-court games, while the Shellbank Fitness Center accommodated half-court games and skills contests.

"Hosting the event makes us come together and show support for these great athletes," said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Jacob Hauer, 633rd Logistics Readiness Squadron vehicle maintenance technician. "It allows us to support the local community and let the athletes have fun."

Langley provided 150 volunteers who assisted during the tournament, serving as referees, registration assistants and event organizers.

"Seeing how they together and interact is inspiring," said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Adriane Saipaia, 438th Supply Chain Operations Squadron stock control supervisor. "Even though they have disabilities, they don't let them hinder them from playing the sports they love."

Hauer, who served as the Shellbank Fitness Center events coordinator, said working with the athletes has its rewards.

"It's definitely a highlight working with the athletes," said Hauer. "Coming out and seeing these guy's faces light up because they get to play basketball is inspiring."
