Air Force Assistance Fund: Airmen helping Airmen at Langley

By Airman 1st Class Victoria H. Taylor 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Langley Air Force Base will officially kick off its 2014 Air Force Assistance Fund campaign March 24. The fundraising campaign will close May 2 with a grand finale Golf Tournament at the Eaglewood Golf Course.

The AFAF is an annual campaign that raises money on active duty military installations. To benefit four different charitable organizations that give support to U.S. Air Force families in need.

"I am a huge proponent for this fundraiser because all donations go back to supporting Airmen," said U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Johnathan Rhodes, 633rd Communications Squadron operations flight commander and installation project officer of the AFAF. "The program is truly focused on Airmen helping Airmen."

The four charities supported by AFAF are the Air Force Villages program, which was founded in 1964 and offers a comfortable and affordable retirement community for widowed spouses of retired Air Force officers; the Air Force Aid Society, created in 1942, which provides emergency assistance, educational aid and community programs; the Gen. and Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundation, a program which helps both officers and enlisted widows and widowers through financial grants; and lastly, the Air Force Enlisted Village, which provides a safe, secure and dignified place for financially-challenged surviving spouses of retired Air Force personnel, enlisted and officers.

Each unit is provided a project officer, and is encouraged to run at least one fundraiser during the six-week campaign.

"The greatest part about being in the military is knowing what an enormous support network is available," said Rhodes. "The campaign is an outstanding illustration of the Air Force taking care of its own and I know these funds are going straight back to our brothers and sisters."
