Will intramural sports on base have referees again?

"Ask the JBLE Commander" is a forum for the Joint Base Langley-Eustis community to ask questions, provide feedback and voice concerns about Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis directly to Col. John J. Allen, Jr., the 633rd Air Base Wing commander.

Question: I have been playing intramural sports since I joined the military. Langley hasn't had refs for the last year and we've been forced to ref our own games. When is Langley going to get refs back, or does the military not put an emphasis on promoting physical fitness anymore?

  Response:

Physical fitness remains an important part of military service. The overall health of our Service members is one of the armed forces' top priorities and something I fully support. Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, we had to cut back on certain programs and activities to ensure mission readiness on behalf of JBLE. One of the tough decisions we had to make was not renewing the referee contract. I assure you, we are working towards a solution to get the referees back, but for now we will have to continue to call our own sporting events.
