Langley Airman receives Yorktown Patriot award

By Staff Sgt. Wesley Farnsworth 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Nikara Brown, 633rd Logistics Readiness Squadron aircraft parts store assistant noncommissioned officer in charge, received the Yorktown Patriot Award from the Comte De Grasse Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution in a ceremony at Fort Eustis, May 22.

The Yorktown Patriot Award, which commemorates the 1781 victory at Yorktown, is given annually to active duty female military personnel who have served in line with the NSDAR values of "God, Country and Home."

To be eligible to receive the award, the recipient is nominated by their commanding officer for making "significant contributions to their faith and country and actively supporting their community and military community." The nominees are from Langley Air Force Base, Fort Eustis, Yorktown Naval Weapons Station and the Coast Guard Academy.

"It's a privilege to be able to present this award to Tech. Sgt. Brown in front of all her co-workers and leadership today," said Linda Lee, NSDAR project patriot chair. "We love being able to come out and show our support to the military and thank them for all their hard work."

Brown was nominated for her work with Awesome Faith Ministries Church, feeding the homeless, accepting and organizing donated clothing and helping organize community child abuse prevention fundraisers. Additionally, Brown volunteers with organizations such as Hampton Healthy Families, Peninsula Food Bank and the Virginia Veterans Hospital.

"To be nominated and then to win against all the other deserving Service members who were nominated is an honor," said Brown.

Brown says she will continue to be an active member in the community and hopes to earn promotion to master sergeant in the near future.
