How is it fair to raise Outdoor Recreation fees?

"Ask the JBLE Commander" is a forum for the Joint Base Langley-Eustis community to ask questions, provide feedback and voice concerns about Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis directly to Col. John J. Allen, Jr., the 633rd Air Base Wing commander.

Question:

I currently store my camper at the Outdoor Recreation RV Storage Lot. As of April 2014 the cost has went from $30 a month to $40 a month. For an extra $10 a month there is no added protection given within the fenced in area, the grass is continually unkept and water drainage is inadequate. My thought is the cost went up to support other FSS business as the cost to run the storage lot is minimum. My question how is it fair to raise my cost to cover other FSS facilities that are losing money?

  Response:

Thank you for this opportunity to address the Outdoor Recreation (ODR) RV Storage Lot fees and condition. In this austere budget environment, our ODR operation has been subject to significant budget cuts, which drives us to continuously evaluate the services we provide along with their operational costs. During this year's evaluation, we noted that ODR has not raised RV Storage fees in 6 years and required higher/more appropriate customer fees to offset operational costs. These are business based decisions used to offset Airman programs and are not taken lightly. Our secure, fenced on-base storage areas continue to provide a safe and secure location to store your RV for a $40/month fee that is still 30-35% below the downtown market. We will ensure the grounds are properly trimmed in the future and have been working to address the larger issue of inadequate site drainage. There should be movement on this important initiative in late summer to early fall. Thank you for your support of the Outdoor Recreation program, if you have any questions or need any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact my POC, Mr. Jeff Tessler, jeffrey.tessler@us.af.mil, 225-2084.
