JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. –
By 2015, shoppers at the Fort Eustis Commissary will be able to experience more than 4,000 additional line items as a result of the store's current expansion project.
Construction began in February and is being conducted in nine phases, scheduled to be completed by August 2015. The expansion includes new administrative areas, an additional 18,000 square feet of new floor space for new freezer and dairy cases, and expanded seafood, deli, bakery and produce sections.
"The additional space will allow for new products, which gives customers more choices and options," said Dennis Pimento, Fort Eustis Commissary officer. "The goal of the expansion is to make the customers' experience at the commissary easier and improved."
Pimento said the initial phase of building new administrative offices is now complete, and the old administrative space will be integrated into the new sales floor. Customers will begin seeing the first part of the sales floor expansion beginning in September when the new freezer cases will be installed, he said.
Patrons will also notice the installation of new dairy cases beginning in November. While the expansion and addition of cases will create a change in shopping flow, Pimento said the impacts to the customer will be minimal.
"We will try everything in our power to keep everything exactly how it is now so there isn't interruption when customers are shopping," said Pimento. "The shopping pattern may change, but we will try to keep those alterations to a minimum."
According to Pimento, an additional benefit of the expansion is that it is being funded by surcharge fees, which also pay for the store's supplies and maintenance.
"It's an expenditure that is being used for the customers' benefit," said Pimento. "Not only will be able to shop for many items they didn't have before, this expansion will help improve their overall shopping experience."
