SFS to turn away motorcyclists without proper PPE

633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Editor's note: The 633rd Air Base Wing Safety Office contributed to this article.

As of Aug. 18, Joint Base Langley-Eustis security forces at both base points of entry began turning away motorcyclists who are not equipped with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

The 633rd Air Base Wing Safety Office offered a list of requirements outlined in Air Force Instruction 91-207, The U.S. Air Force Traffic Safety Program, and Department of Defense Instruction 6055.04, DOD Traffic Safety Program. The following list of standards apply to all military personnel at any time, on or off a DOD installation; all DOD civilian personnel in a duty status, on or off a DOD installation; all persons in or on a government-owned, leased or rented motor vehicle; and all persons any time on an Air Force installation, including all leased, owned or privatized property and housing areas.

PPE requirements for riders and passengers:

- A helmet, certified to meet current Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 218, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Standard 22.05, British Standard 6658, or Snell Standard M2005 or higher, shall be worn and properly fastened under the chin.

- Eye Protection. Goggles, wrap around glasses, or a full-face shield designed to meet or exceed American National Standards Institute Standard Z87.1, or UNECE 22.05 or BS6658 in effect when manufactured, will be properly worn. A windshield does not constitute proper eye protection.

- Protective Clothing. Wearing of long-sleeved shirt or jacket, long trousers and full-fingered gloves or mittens is required. Gloves or mittens will be made from leather or other abrasion-resistant material. Wearing of a motorcycle jacket and pants constructed of abrasion resistant materials such as leather, Kevlar® or Cordura® containing impact-absorbing padding is strongly encouraged.

- Foot Protection. Foot protection includes sturdy over-the-ankle footwear that affords protection for the feet and ankles.

Failure to meet the aforementioned standards will result in motorcyclists being directed away from the installation until proper PPE is obtained.
