Night at the Transportation Museum

By Airman 1st Class Kimberly Nagle 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Princesses, witches and superheroes filled the U.S. Army Transportation Museum Oct. 27, during the museum's 5th annual Night at the Transportation Museum event.

During the event, children 12 and under were encouraged to bring their parents and weave through the halls of the museum experiencing eerie adventures and collecting Halloween treats as they learned about transportation history.

"We transform the inside of the museum into a spooky experience for the kids," said David Hanselman, Transportation Museum director. "They got to see the mannequins come to life."
As a way to teach community members about transportation history, the museum featured more than 10 different transportation-themed galleries equipped with volunteers who passed out candy and assisted with an arts and crafts area.

"We would not be able to do this event without the volunteers," said Hanselman. "They are the ones who bring this event to life."

The family of U.S. Army Sgt.1st Class George Wommack, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command operations non-commissioned officer, said they enjoyed every aspect of the ghostly event, a sentiment that could be verified by the looks on several families' faces as they roamed the halls of the museum.

"This was an awesome way to get the kids out, and a way to experience the museum," said Jamie Wommack, spouse of Sgt. 1st Class Wommack. "We are new to the post, so we used this as a way to get to know the post better and meet new people."

Once all of the princesses, witches and superheroes left the museum with a bag full of candy, a coloring sheet and maybe a little bit of history they did not know before, the mannequins turned still again, ready to reawaken next year to again greet the eager children of Fort Eustis.
