MCAHC promotes lung cancer awareness

By Andrew J. Brown McDonald Army Health Center Public Affairs

The McDonald Army Health Center campus and outlying clinics became tobacco free to promote awareness and the health benefits of being tobacco free, July 1. Five months later, the health center is promoting tobacco-cessation-awareness during National Lung Cancer Awareness month.

"Awareness plays a large role in combating lung cancer and caring for those who have the disease," said U.S. Army Col. Glenda Lock, MCAHC commander. "By quitting, smokers will be taking an important step toward a healthier life; one that can lead to reducing cancer risk."

The MCAHC Preventive Medicine Clinic staff set up an information booth at the Fort Eustis Exchange from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., to encourage smokers to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day.

The table was set up in support of the "Great American Smokeout," a day the American Cancer Society celebrates on the third Thursday in November each year to encourage the 43.8 million Americans who smoke to take steps necessary to quit.

According to the American Cancer Society, decades of anti-tobacco efforts have cemented the connection between tobacco use and lung cancer. The positive health results are undeniable, and have saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

Those interested in quitting should visit cancer.org for tips to quit the habit and lead a healthier lifestyle.

Tobacco Cessation classes are held at the Fort Eustis Health Management Clinic located at MCAHC on every first and second Wednesday of each month from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The clinic also offers online classes.
