JBLE encourages Service members to become financially fit during Military Saves Week

By Staff Sgt. Teresa J. Cleveland 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, is participating in the annual Military Saves Week campaign by encouraging U.S. Service members and their families to save money, from Feb. 23 to 28, 2015.

As part of America Saves Week, MSW is a Department of Defense campaign that seeks to motivate and educate Service members on the importance of creating long- and short-term savings goals. This year's MSW theme is "Set a goal, make a plan and save automatically."

"Military Saves Week is a great opportunity to help Service members and their families in our community set a goal, make a plan, and save automatically," said Maureen Elam, U.S. Army Community Service personal financial specialist. "It's an opportunity for organization like ours to promote good savings behavior and a chance for individuals to assess their own saving status."

Through the U.S. Air Force Airman and Family Readiness Center at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, and the U.S. ACS and Soldier and Family Transition Assistance Center at Fort Eustis, Virginia, Service members and their families can register for luncheons, financial-management classes and obtain credit reports and analysis free of charge.

"Less than half of our Service members have an emergency savings fun," said Darlene Morgan, ACS financial advisor. "Military Saves Week serves as a means to motivate them to start saving for the future and obtaining financial stability."

Available workshops include information on retirement planning, car buying, saving and investing, planning before and after deployment, and Thrift Savings Plan information. For those not enrolled in courses, tips of the day and information boards are posted across the installations.

Morgan encourages those interested in saving money to visit www.militarysaves.org, and take an online pledge to save.

"Our ultimate goal is to connect [Service members] to the website because there are infinite resources to help them there including tips and newsletters," said Morgan. "It takes dedication, effort and commitment so we hope they take the pledge and stick to it."
