JBLE to host SAAM events

Sexual Assault Awareness Month kicks-off throughout the Department of Defense April 2015.

Joint Base Langley-Eustis will host events starting in April to advocate for the awareness month with a theme of "Eliminate Sexual Assault: Know your part, do your part."

"[Sexual Assault Awareness Month] is the biggest moment of the year to get the word out on education and what the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response team's purpose is," said Vannessa Williams, 633rd Air Base Wing SAPR office victim advocate. "We are a joint base so we have to represent as a team. Many of the events this year are joint."

This year's events include:

April 2: The JBLE Rally will take place at Murphy Field, Fort Eustis. During the event, U.S. Air Force Airmen and U.S Army Soldiers will come to formation in the form of a SAAM ribbon. A bus will be available for transportation to and from Fort Eustis, and the UOD for the day is ABUs or ACUs. The Training and Doctrine Command band will perform after the formation.

April 6, 9, 20, 24: Meet Your Victim Advocate days -- volunteer victim advocates will convene in front of the commissary and Base Exchange to meet with members of the JBLE community and present educational information to increase awareness.

April 7, 23 JBLE Sexual Assault Awareness Production  -- The Sexual Assault Theater Group will present an Air Force related skit on Sexual Assault Prevention at the Langley Air Force Base theater.

April 8, 22: Sexual Assault Awareness Fair- The SAPR office, family advocacy, drug and alcohol prevention, chaplain's corps and military family life consultants bring awareness to the community through literature and games at the Langley Hospital atrium.

April 14, 27: JBLE Sexual Assault Awareness Production: The Sexual Assault Theater Group will present an Army related skit on Sexual Assault Prevention at Fort Eustis' Wiley theater.

April 29: The 4th Annual S.T.A.R Road Rally-- This event will take place at Memorial Park, Langley AFB, at 9 a.m. Riders must have completed the motorcycle safety course, and be in place by 7:30 a.m. at the park. The 70-mile route starts and ends at Memorial Park, going through Yorktown. Once all riders return, the chaplain corps will provide food. The deadline to register is April 15. "Prevention is the key and this is all a way to get people more aware and involved while educating them, so they can help prevent sexual assault year round," said Bernadette Hardy, 633rd Air Base Wing SAPR office Sexual Assault Response coordinator.
