JOINT BASE LANGELY-EUSTIS, Va. –
To express gratitude toward those who served in both World War II and the Korean War, Honor Flight Historic Triangle Virginia, part of the national Honor Flight Network non-profit organization, provided an all-expense-paid, escorted trip to Washington, D.C., to visit the war memorials April 18, 2015.
Nearly two-thirds of the U.S. military Service members who fought in WWII have already passed away. Those still living are now close to 90 years old, having joined their respective services mostly as teenagers.
Matt Hartman, HFHTV's mission director, said WWII, Korean War and terminally ill veterans were given top priority.
"Our veterans aren't asking for recognition," said Hartman. "Many feel they don't deserve the trip. But if you served during these wars, no matter what role you played, you contributed to protecting this nation and the freedoms we all enjoy today. The memorials in D.C. are not only a tribute to your sacrifice, but a celebration of the spirit of your generation of Service members," said Hartman. "Please allow the Honor Flight Network to honor you, or a veteran you may know, in this special way."
Hartman said HFHTV is continuing to search for veterans to provide an honor flight. For future trip dates, as well as applications, visit the organization's website at
