Fort Eustis to open dog park

By Senior Airman Kimberly Nagle 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

The 733rd Force Support Division joined forces with other agencies across Fort Eustis, Virginia, to build a dog park set to open in early May 2015.

The large grassy area, fenced in by a tall green fence will be located on Pershing Ave behind the tennis courts, near the Pershing Child Development Center.

Fort Eustis community members are always encouraged to submit ideas, or improvements to the post leadership, and the dog park was one of those ideas a few members had.

"We had several inquiries from families on post wanting a place for their dogs to run around," said Kay White, 733rd FSD Outdoor Recreation aid supervisor. "We took their ideas and started working on the dog park."

The dog park will be open to those who are authorized to enter the base. To use the facility, owners must register their dog with Outdoor Recreation.

To register, owners will need tags and records indicating all vaccinations are current including rabies, distemper, parvovirus and bordetella, and must present a city dog license registration.

Owner will also need to purchase an annual registration for $10.

Once an animal is registered, the owner will receive the code to enter the park, along with a list of rules to be followed at all times, said White.

The rules are as follows:

1. Only dog owners who register with Outdoor Recreation are authorized to use the park.
2. All dogs must be on individual leashes when entering and exiting the park, but dogs can run freely once inside.
3. Unattended dogs are unauthorized. All dogs must be within the view of, and within voice control of, the owner who must maintain control to prevent aggressive behavior. Dogs with a known history of aggressive or dangerous behavior will be asked to leave.
4. Toys are allowed, with the exception of rawhides and bones.
5. Owners must remove their dog's waste, and are responsible for repair or cost of any damages, including holes dug by their pets.
6. Only dogs are allowed in the park, no other animals.
7. Children 12 years of age and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
8. Each owner may only bring two pets into the park.
9. Participants must report violations to Outdoor Recreation.
10. For your safety, do not share the access code with non-registered owners.
Registration will become available once the dog park officially opens.
