FORT LEE, Va. –
In an effort to address the transitional needs of military children, Terry McAuliffe, Virginia governor, signed a bill geared toward identifying military-connected students newly-enrolled in Hampton Roads Community Schools, April 30, 2015.
Military Child Identifier Senate Bill No.1347, built by the Joint Military Services School Liaison Committee, contributes to the committee's objective of addressing the planning, promotion and execution of the transitional challenges of the military connected children; the need for guidance counselor workshops; and the special education needs of military children in the largest population of military students in any single geographic area of the nation.
Glendeline Lee, 633rd Force Support Squadron school liaison, noticed there was no true accountability for the number of military-dependent, school-aged children attending Hampton Roads Community schools.
"The uniformed services-connected student identifier bill lets us, school liaisons, get exact numbers for all children of any person serving in either the active or reserve component of the Armed Forces," said Lee.
This data will help the JMSSLC receive money due to the ability to account for more military children which in turn help the school liaison with direct and individualized service., Lee added.
Julie Gifford, Office of the Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs regional military liaison, said she is aware of the JMSSLC's hard work and dedication in making sure military families are taken care of.
"School liaisons are a strong voice and really make a difference," said Gifford. "I give big thanks for the work they do in serving the military families in Virginia."
