Langley Club 5/6 hosts Volunteer Fair

By Staff Sgt. Teresa J. Cleveland 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Approximately 40 local nonprofit organizations gathered at the Shellbank Fitness Center at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, May 8 as a way to educate U.S. Service members and families on local volunteer opportunities.

"We really wanted to expose the Airmen to all the different prospects in the area that may interest them," said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Dorothy Dingba, Langley Club 5/6 event coordinator. "Whether they want to work with animals, children, the environment or historical preservation, there is something here for everyone."

Organizations such as the United Service Organizations, Peninsula Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Soldiers and Airmen Against Drunk Driving, and the Mariner's Museum spoke with interested Service members, civilian employees and family members about the volunteer opportunities they provide.

"We are always looking for Airmen who can volunteer their time," said Staff Sgt. Patrick Hart, SAADD president. "By being at this event, we can all work as organizations to find the support we need and provide as much information as possible on the spot so Airmen can find new things they [can potentially become] passionate about."

The event allowed Airmen to give back to the community, according to Hart.

"The military gets a lot of support from surrounding communities so it's really important for us to give back and show them how much we appreciate their backing," said Hart.
