JBLE service members honor veterans for Armed Forces Day

By Staff Sgt. Ciara Gosier 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

U.S. Service members from Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis, Virginia, visited a local hospice to honor veterans and family members of veterans during an Armed Force Day pinning ceremony, May 16, 2015.

The pinning ceremony served as a way to give back to veterans who have served proudly and to remind them that their service to our nation was meaningful.

President Harry S. Truman led the effort in February 1950, to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.

On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force Days. The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.

U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Elroy Williams, 633rd Force Support Squadron Self-Assessment program manager, was one volunteer Airman who participated in the event.

"We honor those who answered the call to serve this country on Armed Forces Day," said Williams. "This ceremony is just a small way for us to say thank you for patriotic service in support of the United States."

Williams said the ceremony recognized what the veterans contributed toward history and ensured their efforts were not forgotten.

"This ceremony tells and shows them that we have not forgotten and never will forget their sacrifices to ensure our freedom," said Williams.

Airman 1st Class MarQuis McLester, 633rd FSS force management apprentice, also participated in the ceremony to honor the veterans.

"Let's honor our heroes, whether they're mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, sons or daughters," said McLester. "Do not thank them during this event but when you see a veteran, just saying 'thank you for your service' will brighten up their day."
