JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. –
The 4th of July, a holiday dedicated to honoring American History, is also known for backyard BBQs, fireworks, and time with family and friends. As we remember America's Independence Day, it's important to keep our celebrations safe and incident free.
Outdoor grilling and firework displays are enjoyable activities but do come with associated risks. Statistically, the 4th of July is one of the most dangerous days of the year for fire-related incidents and injuries. Fireworks, while spectacular, are dangerous. Fireworks were involved in 11,400 injuries treated in hospital emergency departments in 2013 across the United States. Fireworks also accounted for eight deaths.
While cookouts are a staple of summer weekends and holidays, 8,800 home fires are caused annually by grilling and nearly half of all injuries involving grills involve thermal burns.
Here are some tips to keep you safe while enjoying the holiday:
Grilling Safety Tips:
· Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
· The grill should be placed well away from the home and deck railings and out from under eaves or overhanging branches. At Joint Base Langley-Eustis, base housing residents are required to place grills at least 10 feet from walls or railings.
· Always keep children and pets away from the grill area.
· Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
· Never leave your grill unattended.
Propane Grills
· Check the major connection points between the gas (propane) tank hose and the regulator and cylinder, and where the hose connects to the burners. Tighten if loose.
· Check the gas (propane) tank hose for potential leaks. To do that:
o Turn the propane tank on. Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose using a brush or spray bottle. If there is a gas leak, the propane will release bubbles (big enough to see) around the hose.
· If you determine your grill has a gas leak by smell or by administering the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off the gas tank and burners. If the leak stops at that point, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak doesn't stop, call the fire department immediately.
· If you smell gas while cooking, move away from the grill and call the fire department immediately. Do not move the grill.
Charcoal Grills
· There are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.
· If you use a starter fluid, only use starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.
· Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
· There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.
· When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.
Firework Safety Tips
· Consumer fireworks are not allowed on Joint Base Langley-Eustis.
· Leave fireworks to the professionals. Do not use consumer fireworks.
· The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public display conducted by trained professionals.
· After the firework display, children should never pick up fireworks that may be left over, they may still be active.
