Fort Eustis to improve fitness centers

By Staff Sgt. Natasha Stannard 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

The Fort Eustis, Virginia, fitness centers are now undergoing improvements that are set to temporarily close portions of each facility through November 2015.

The additions will include new equipment to all facilities, fitness classes at Anderson Field House, an increased number of personal trainers and an improved intramural sports program.

"There have been many changes in the fitness industry and we want new offerings for our patrons to help meet their fitness goals," said Kellie Jorgenson, 733rd Force Support Division fitness director.  "We want people to get in a fitness regiment and support what is mission essential."

Intramural sports program

Devin Robinson, 733rd FSD sports director, said he recently restarted the post intramural sports program. Soldiers can now participate in intramural sports including volleyball, basketball, flag football, softball, soccer, golf and bowling.

Robinson added the leagues will also foster camaraderie across Joint Base Langley-Eustis as the champions of each installation will face off in a championship game for the JBLE title.

League postings, scores and sign-up details are updated at the start and finish of each season at new.jbleforcesupport.com/fort-eustis-anderson-field-house/.

Facility upgrades

Expected equipment changes patrons will see at Anderson Field House include:

· A tactical training locker available for checkout after completing an equipment use orientation Soldiers can schedule the orientation at the field house.
· New weight equipment including two squat racks, a lifting platform, an eight-station cable cross-over and a plated vertical squat machine.
· New cardio and aerobic training equipment including a rope training machine, two treadmills and two adaptive motion trainers.

Additionally, the McClellan Fitness Center will receive a plated vertical squat machine, a rope training machine, two adaptive motion trainers, two curve treadmills and eight traditional treadmills.

Finally, the Satellite Fitness Annex will receive an adaptive motion trainer, curve treadmill and six repurposed treadmills from the McClellan Fitness Center.

Jorgenson said that as new equipment comes in, areas of the weight and cardio rooms will close to allow fitness center personnel to place the machines.

Fitness Classes

New group exercise classes at Anderson Field House will include yoga, PiYo, Pilates, spin, TRX, Wellbeats virtual trainer and volunteer-led functional fitness and Zumba. More classes may also become available. The cost for non-volunteer led classes is $2 per class, and will include prizes and other incentive programs.

To make room for the classes, the current spin and exercise area at Anderson will convert into a group exercise room and the equipment will move to a racquetball court where spin classes will now take place.

"It is important to improve services for our base members and give them access to these new items and training methods in order to improve readiness and provide our service members and their families the best possible equipment and facilities possible," said Jorgenson. "The new additions to the fitness center will enhance the efficiency of the gym and provide better physical readiness to active duty members, while the new layout will help alleviate congestion and provide members with a better variety of exercises than previously offered."

Currently, there are no set dates for the upcoming changes; however, the fitness center staff will announce temporary closures via signs at the building entrances, and online at http://new.jbleforcesupport.com/ and https://www.facebook.com/jbleforcesupport.
