JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. –
U.S. Airmen and families from the local area gathered during a reception for the "Adopt an Airman" program at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, Nov. 16, 2015.
The program, which aims to strengthen the bonds between the military and Hampton Roads communities, pairs first-term Airmen with local families who will provide a "home away from home," giving Airmen support from the community.
"It's great to see everyone here to build a relationship between the city and Langley," said U.S. Air Force Col. Caroline Miller, the commander of the 633rd Air Base Wing.
During the reception, the Airmen and families had the opportunity to meet for the first time and put a face with a name.
"We want [these Airmen] to know Hampton appreciates their service and is behind them 100 percent," said Bruce Sturk, the director of the Hampton Federal Facilities Support. "They may be serving far away from home, so we want to give them a sense of home away from home in the Hampton community."
For many of the Airmen this gives them the chance to get into the community and meet people during the holiday season, which will hopefully, last for years to come.
