JBLE sets goals during Military Saves Week

By Staff Sgt. Teresa J. Cleveland 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

The Military Saves Week campaign kicked off at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, Feb. 22, 2016.

The annual campaign, which will last until Feb. 26, provides installations and organizations an opportunity to promote good savings behavior and a chance for U.S. Service members and their families to assess their own savings status. The Army Community Services, Soldier and Family Assistance Center and Airman & Family Readiness Center will be hosting events throughout the campaign to encourage Service members and their families to save money.

"This year's theme is 'Start Small, Think Big,'" said Darlene Morgan, financial counselor assigned to the ACS and S&FAC at Fort Eustis. "Even the smallest amount [of money] can jumpstart a saving plan. Don't hesitate or delay saving, start now because it's refund time."

Fort Eustis' ACS and Langley's A&FRC staff encourage Service members to build wealth, not debt, by hosting events such as classes and luncheons to provide information on the Thrift Savings Plan and ways to increase one's credit score.

Along with the Thrift Savings Plan, Understanding Medical Waivers, Budgeting 101 for Teens and Increase Your FICO Score classes available during Military Saves Week, military members are encouraged to save throughout the year.

"Members can go to www.militarysaves.org  and check out the resources, take the pledge and start saving," said Morgan. "This requires dedication and commitment at the individual level but organizations can also participate in the effort to encourage saving."

Members can also schedule to speak with a financial counselor at ACS or the AFRC to discuss their options for getting out of debt and developing a savings plan.
