JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. –
As the weather begins to warm up, more people look to enjoy the sun and participate in outdoor activities on Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia.
Being aware of possible hazards that can hinder the summer months with an injury is essential to JBLE community members. These tips can potentially prevent injuries and save a life.
1. Water safety - Maintaining proper hydration is a critical aspect of warm weather. Dehydration can lead to numerous health issues like headaches, sluggishness and fainting, along with more severe problems.
According to Staff Sgt. Victor Jones, occupational safety technician assigned to the 633rd Air Base Wing Safety, swimming in approved areas, like swimming pools, and the use of flotation devices can reduce unnecessary injuries or possible deaths.
2. Yard work safety - Wearing long pants, long-sleeved shirts and sturdy comfortable close-toed shoes can reduce the amount of yard work accidents while mowing and weeding the lawn. Before operating any kind of machinery, ensure proper inspection is used to check for possible hazards.
When using a ladder, ensure it is firmly on the ground and never climb to the top of a ladder, because it could result in falling off.
3. Sports, fitness and recreation safety - When playing a sport or participating in an outdoor event, wearing the proper equipment like helmets, pads and reflective gear are important in reducing the chances of injuries, such as concussions or broken bones.
4. Traffic safety - Spring is a busy time for families to take vacations, traveling to these vacation destinations come with its own hazards. Long drives can cause driver fatigue, resulting in falling asleep behind the wheel. Having a planned route with rest breaks built in can alleviate fatigue and loosing awareness while driving.
5. Barbecue safety - Knowing the safety protocols for the type of grill being used can aid in preventing possible mishaps. Before operating a gas grill, check fittings on gas hoses. If using a charcoal grill, maintain supervision of the fire not letting it grow uncontrollable.
6. Spring cleaning safety - The spring brings cleaning to the forefront of chores for people and families. When using cleaning chemicals ensure they are out of reach of children and pets, do not allow them to be swallowed. If a mishap occurs, get to the nearest medical facility as soon as possible.
7. Motorcycle safety - As the weather gets warm, more motorcycle riders are on the road. When driving, check blind spots and allow enough room for changing lanes.
Proper attire when riding a motorcycle like a helmet, boots and reflective vest can limit possible injuries in case of an accident.
8. Insect repellants - Insect repellants are important in preventing and repelling biting pests such as mosquitoes and ticks that can carry the West Nile virus, the Zika virus, Malaria, Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
Never use repellant on cuts, wounds, irritated skin, the eyes or mouth but only apply to exposed skin and clothing.
9. Camping safety - Camping can be an enjoyable experience as long as preparations are taken to limit possible mishaps that could occur. Preparing food in tight, waterproof bags or containers and storing in an insulated cooler can ensure enough food is available. If hiking, walking or biking, be aware of possible poison ivy, sumac or poison oak and never go alone.
10. Fireworks safety - According to clayton.delware.gov fireworks can burn up to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit, and can cause burns, lacerations, amputations and blindness. Stay as least 500 feet away from professional firework displays.
